The one and only, flamboyant, artistic, skilful, maverick, Frank Worthington, seen here gaining one of his eight England International Caps, against Scotland during the Home International Championships, at Hamden Park on 18th May 1974. Frank scored twice for his Country during this period in an extremely colourful career, and would surely have secured many more Caps (and goals), if it wasn’t for Don Revie being appointed as England Manager towards the end of the same year! Frank played the game, as he did life itself, with flair and artistry, ever willing to entertain , and to this day, Frank always “looks on the bright side of life”!

Description

If Elvis Presley had been born an Englishman, it is almost certain he would have been a Frank Worthington fan! Frank plied his trade as a wonderfully gifted and naturally entertaining centre forward with twelve different Football League Clubs between 1966 and 1988, scoring 234 times, including a spell with Bolton Wanders in 1978/9, where Frank secured ‘The Golden Boot’ as the First Division’s Leading Goalscorer. He also gained 8 Caps for England during this period, scoring twice, and it is argued that had he had some Brazilian ancestry, his Caps total would have been much larger!!

The age old footballing cliche of ‘Paying the Ticket Price to watch One Player’ certainly applied to Big Frank, as he never failed to entertain wherever he played.

Off the field, Frank was equally ebullient and charismatic. A life long Elvis advocate, who took the pilgrimage to ‘Gracelands’ on more than one occasion, he was once quoted as saying “I spent 90 per cent of my wages on Wine, Women and Song, I wasted the rest!!”.

When asked to join Greatest Card Ltd, Frank said “I always, always put the fans first, on and off the pitch, and if I can once again have a connection with the people that matter through the messages in these Cards, I for one, will be very happy”.
